New version of SLD goes online

11th September 2014

Scottish Language Dictionaries (SLD) have just launched a new version of the Dictionary of the Scots Language / Dictionar o the Scots Leid online at www.dsl.ac.uk.  This new version should be much easier to search and will now be updated as time goes by. Chris Robinson, who is Director of SLD, made the important comment that since the dictionaries were established, back in the 1920s, the language has continued to develop, and new words, and new usages of old words (by transference, etc) are being added all the time. This means that, in the past, it has sometimes been difficult to keep up, or that some words or meanings have been missed out. But now SLD hopes to tackle this issue. By 2002 the dictionaries of Scots compiled by SLD (and its previous bodies) had grown to 22 volumes, and still going! Chris Robinson and her team are always on the look-out for more information to enable them to keep the Scots Dictionaries as accurate as possible. If you would like to contribute information please contact Chriss team by e-mail on mail@scotsdictionaries.org.uk or by telephone on 0131 650 4149.
