Sangschaw and Book Launch

The Scots Language Society, together with Welsh Aacdemic Press, is hosting a book launch along with the Society’s yearly Sangschaw competition. The event takes place at 6pm on Tuesday 6 November in the Cellar Bar, The Canon’s Gait, 232 Canongate, Royal Mile, Edinburgh. Events begin at 6.05pm when Bob Purdie will launch his book ‘Hugh MacDiarmid Black Green Red and Tartan’. The Society president, Chris Robinson, will introduce speakers Owen Dudley Edwards, Ashley Drake and the author. Book signing will follow at 6.30pm together with singing from Ian Young and Lesley-Ann Weir. At 7.30pm the winners of the yearly Sansgchaw competition will be invited to read short extracts from their work. This year’s winners were, for the Hugh MacDiarmid Tassie, Frances Robson for ‘The Radgie Rap’ and runner-up Sam Gilliland for ‘Rede Afore ye get Yokit’. The winner of the John MacPhail Law Tassie (for translation) was Frances Robson for ‘The Locomotive’ with runner-up Douglas Kynoch for his work ‘The Hamecomin’. The winner of the Short Story Robert McLellan Tassie was Stepehn Pacitti’s ‘Pyntin the Been’ with the runner-up prize going to David C Purdie for ‘The Cream Cookie’. The formal event will finish at 8pm.
