Remembering Matt McGinn

29th January 2019

Recently a blue plaque was unveiled in Calton, Glasgow, in memory of Matt McGinn. McGinn was born in 1927 just off the Gallowgate in the city and is best remembered for his part in the folk revival of the 1950’s and 1960’s, but he was a many of many talents. A poet, playwright, singer and songwriter, he gave voice to working-class life and campaigned on social and political issues of his day. Sadly, he died at the early age of 48 in 1977.

Fan James Scott became concerned that Matt McGinn was being forgotten and decided to raise a fund for a plaque to his memory. Matt McGinn wrote in both English and Scots and several of his songs in Scots are still popular, such as Coorie-doon and If it wisnae for the union. Some examples of his songs are on the SLC website.
