Scots Language Centre Centre for the Scots Leid

Football Crazy

Now that the 2009-10 football season is well underway, the Scots Language Centre has delved into the history and traditions of the game as expressed through the Scots language, and what a rich tradition it is too! It was – and still is – entirely natural that Scots-speaking people should choose o express their feelings about football in their own language. Football remains one of the few areas in Scottish public life in which the language has been freely and frequently used. This is probably because football went hand-in-hand with Scottish working class life and it has been the Scottish working classes who have continued to speak the language in modern times. Visitors will find a variety of articles relating to the topic of football on the left hand menu, ranging from the origins of the game in Scotland, through attitudes towards it, and the ways in which football developed – and was celebrated – in more modern times.
