Dictionary of Nature published

3rd October 2018

On 20 September 2018 a further contribution to Scots wordstock was published. A Scots Dictionary of Nature by Amanda Thomson brings together words from the Scots language relating to land, wood, weather, birds, water and walking. Thomson, who is a visual artist, teaches at Glasgow School of Art, and commented that the words reveal how Scots see the world and their environment. It has been said that this work “brings together – for the first time” such words, but in fact Scots Language Dictionaries and its predecessors have published this material both in dictionaries and thesaurus works over the past century. As Thomson herself states she “mined old dictionaries for words” but any handy, single reference work about this subject is a welcome addition. Thomson will officially launch the book at Grantown-on-Spey on Thursday 11 October.

A Scots Dictionary of Nature is published in hardback at 256pp and priced at £12.99. It is available through Amazon.
