Scots Language Centre Centre for the Scots Leid

Information wanted on fishing customs and language

11th May 2010

Dr Linda Gunn from the UNESCO backed Intangible Cultural Heritage project is asking visitors to the Scots Language Centre to provide information about customs, celebrations and superstitions in fishing communities throughout Scotland.

Gunn says, ‘I’m particularly interested in superstitions related to fishing like the words that shouldn’t be mentioned on a boat. We’d also like to hear about the names for different tools of the trade and to record how these vary round the country, for example, the name for a creel or even for a crab.’

Gunn would like to receive information about the gala days and celebrations that are held in fishing communities like Port Seton.
