Scots Language Centre Centre for the Scots Leid

Scotsfest for Schools

20th April 2010

SCOTSFEST, a new company set up to support Scots language teaching in schools, has been created by authors, singers and storytellers, Stuart McHardy and Ewan McVicar. Using a cross-curricular approach based on the Curriculum for Excellence, Scotsfest aims to draw on a combination of cultural and historical themes and tailor these to the local language situation. During one day visits, pupils are encouraged to develop their understanding and appreciation of the Scots language within the wider context of culture, history, literature and song.  School visits can be from a single individual or a group of up to five people giving multiple presentations tailored to specific classroom ages. According to McHardy and McVicar, Scotsfest promotes Scottish culture and language “…as a living, dynamic force for educational good.”

Between 10th and 24th March 2010, eight Scotsfest school visits took place in primary schools within Scotland. McHardy and McVicar report a positive response from teachers and pupils.
