Belinda and her handmaid attempt to comfort her, believing her love affair with the Trojan prince Aeneas is the cause of her grief. Belinda believes the troubles in Carthage could be solved if Dido and Aeneas are married, but Dido believes falling in love will make her a weak monarch. Scene 2 A sorceress plots the destruction of Carthage. She plans to send her trusted elf to Aeneas, disguised as the god Mercury, to convince him to leave Dido. The sorceress believes that she can overthrow Dido if Aeneas leaves. The sorceress and the four witches conjure a storm so Dido, who is hunting in the woods, will be forced to return to her palace. Interval Act 2 Scene 1 Belinda and the handmaid are hunting in the grove, making the most of some peace, when they come across a scene of horror that has been left by the sorceress. Dido enters and instantly recognises the threat and heads for safety. Aeneas lagging behind is greeted by a witch, in disguise as Mercury. Aeneas believes the hooded figure is actually Mercury, who advises him to leave and found a new city of Troy. Aeneas agrees to follow what he believes to be the wishes of the gods, and decides to leave Dido. Scene 2 One of the witches is on lookout as the Trojan fleet prepares to depart. The sorceress outlines her plans to destroy Aeneas while he’s at sea. Scene 3 Aeneas returns to Dido to tell her that he must leave, however he quickly changes his mind and proclaims he will stay. Dido is distraught and rejects Aeneas for ever thinking about leaving her. Dido forces Aeneas to leave, and proclaims that she must die now Aeneas has gone. WWW.SCOTSOPERAPROJECT.COM
