Cyrano in Scots

10th September 2018

Edwin Morgan’s Scots version of Cyrano de Bergerac is currently showing at the Tramway in Glasgow. Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a writer and libertine who lived in 17th century France and in 1897 Edmond Rostand wrote a play Cyrano de Bergerac based on his life. The play is set in 1640 and is centred on Cyrano de Bergerac’s love for his cousin Roxane whom he believes is in love with the soldier Christian. Morgan’s version translates the humour and elegant speeches of the original into their Scots equivalents. The production, directed by Dominic Hill, and starring Brian Ferguson in the lead role, will be showing at the Tramway until 22 September and then going on tour until 10 November.
