Bookbug App

Scottish Book Trust have launched a Bookbug App, which features Scots songs for pre-school learners. The app provides the lyrics and audio for favourites such as ‘Three Craws’ and ‘Katie Bairdie’. You can download the app here.

Scots CLPL at University of Glasgow

Academics at the University of Glasgow are offering a free CLPL event for Secondary teachers on Friday 14th June 2019, 11:00 – 16:00. As shown in the pdf flyer below, the event will feature presentations of resources that support the teaching of Scots in schools (such as The Scots Syntax Atlas and The SCOTS Corpus) and lunch will be provided. SQA ‘Understanding Standards’ resources for Scots Language Award

SQA have published case studies for levels 5 and 6 of the Scots Language Award. The case studies, which have been written by teachers in Lourdes Secondary school, Smithycroft Secondary school and Kirkwall Grammar school, feature information about methods of delivering and assessing the award a well as the benefits gained. Accentricity podcast

Dr Sadie Ryan, a lecturer in Sociolingustics at University of Glasgow, has recorded a series of podcasts which consider features of language such as use of dialect and style-switching. These topics may be of interest to learners studying the SQA Scots language award. The episodes are fortnightly and you can access them here.  

 

Scots in TES

TES have published an article highlighting the importance of Scots in schools by Bruce Eunson, Scots language coordinator at Education Scotland. Eunson considers learners who may speaks Scots in the playground but not within the confines of the classroom, and reflects on whether the negative perception that some people have of Scots may have an influence on children. Scots language events at Soutar Festival of Words

There are some Scots language events at 'Soutar Festival of Words', a new literary festival in Perthshire, from Scots story telling to a discussion of Cyber scots - scots language on the internet. Click here for information and tickets.
