The Scottish Parliament

At the swearing-in ceremony that takes place at the beginning of a new session of the Scottish Parliament, all MSPs are obliged to swear in using English. They may, however, repeat the oath or affirmation in another language. Several MSPs choose to do this in Scots.

In addition, many MSPs take the oath in the Scottish manner, with uplifted hand but not holding the bible.

In 2016, 4 members repeated their oath or solemn affirmation in North East Scots (Doric), and one member repeated it in general Scots.

Listen to Michael Russell MSP (SNP) repeat his oath in general Scots here.

Listen to Peter Chapman MSP (Con) repeat his oath in North East Scots (Doric) here.
