The Night Before Christmas

Tippermuir Books Ltd has recently published a Scots translation of The Night Before Christmas. This poem was first published anonymously by American academic Clement Clarke Moore of New York in 1823 and has since become a firm favourite for this time of year. The Scots version – The Nicht Afore Christmas – has been translated by Irene McFarlane and is illustrated by Rosemary Cunningham. It begins with the well known lines “Twis the nicht afore Christmas, whan aa through the hoose, nae a craitur wis steerin, no een a moose” an is set in the Scottish context of a family living at the National Trust for Scotland tenement house in Garnethill, Glasgow.
