Equal Treatment for Lowland Culture

MSPs at Parliament protest

The Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland has launched a campaign called ‘Folk for Folk’ in an effort to highlight the need for equal treatment of all of Scotland’s indigenous cultures. The TMSA and others are in great difficulties as a result of financial cuts made by the Scottish Arts Council which are felt to have had an unduly negative affect on Lowland Scottish culture. A petition by the TMSA states that Scotland has one of the richest living traditions in Europe and that all her indigenous languages should be treated equally. The petition further calls on the Scottish Government and similar organisations to treat all of Scotland’s indigenous cultures on an equal footing and ensure that funding is in place in all government arts policies. To underline this call, a demonstration was held outside the Scottish Parliament on 4 September which was attened by several MSPs including Rob Gibson, Bill Wilson, Aileen Campbell and Gil Paterson. Dr John Morran, Director of the TMSA, has called on the public to support the petition by following this link: http://www.tmsa.org.uk/news/in
