Debate on the Scots Language
The National Library of Scotland, in conjunction with the Scots Language Centre, is to hold an important public debate about the place of the Scots language in Scottish society today. The panel and audience will be asked whether the language still matters, whether using a few Scots words in English is enough, or whether the language should be developed to ehnance its formal registers? Entitled 'Scots Language Today' the debate will take place on Tuesday 23 September 2008, at 7pm in the National Library of Scotland, Causewayside, 33 Salisbury Place, Edinburgh. Michael Hance, Director of the Scots Language Centre, will chair a diverse panel of people with a Scots connection: Rab Wilson, Gillian Munro, Professor John Corbett, Professor James McGonigal and David Purves. Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture in the Scottish Government, will also be special guest at the event. If you would like to attend this free event please call the events line on 0131 623 4674 or e-mail: events@nls.uk.
