Library of Congress changes mind
Categorised in:
The Library of Congress in America recently angered many Scots by its decision in 2006 to reclassify all Scottish literature as “English”. The cataloguing staff had decided to abandon some 40 headings and so categorise all Scottish writers as “English”. World renowned bards, such as Robert Burns, though writing in the Scots language, were redefined as writing “English Poetry”. However, late in 2007, several writers, and even a minister or two at the Scottish parliament, protested that the literature, languages and very identity of Scotland would be buried. The Library has now decided to back track on this policy and change all the writers back into Scots again.
