International Year of Languages 2008
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages and UNESCO has been given the task of coordinating activities during the year. The Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura, insists that every linguistic community should be encouraged and permitted to use its mother tongue as widely as possible, including within education, and master an international language along with it. He also added that speakers of international languages should be encouraged to master a regional language in turn. Scots speakers will find Mr Matsuura’s comments particularly pertinent since he states that there are thousands of languages spoken daily which are absent from education, the media, usually from publishing, and in public usage. UNESCO would like government and public agencies to develop and encourage language policies. International Mother Language Day will be held on 21 February 2008. UNESCO calls on governments to use this as an appropriate date for the introduction of language initiatives.
