Inquiry into Scots - at last?
Reports in today's papers suggest that culture Minister, Linda Fabiani (pictured right) is to launch an inquiry into the Scots language, looking specifically at the way the language should be supported and ecnouraged.
Reports are sketchy about the minister's thinking and contain no details of when the inquiry might begin. However, Rob Gibson MSP, chair of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Scots, has already welcomed Fabiani's proposal.
Speaking yesterday, Gibson said, "I fully support the announcement by Culture minister Linda Fabiani who told BBC Scotland Sunday Live that the responses of the public, private and voluntary sectors will be audited with regards to their views on the uses of Scots. Since it is the daily speech of around one and half million Scots this is long overdue."
He went on to describe the proposal as, "a significant event in the moves to end the neglect and denigration of one of our native tongues."
The Herald carried a report on the proposal today. You can read it at
