Scots to go on 2011 census
At a meeting of the Scottish parliament’s Equal Opportunities Committee, in December 2007, the issue of a Scots question in the 2011 census was raised once again. As this report goes out the parliament and related groups are preparing the ground for the census. Dr Bill Wilson, MSP for West of Scotland, haes enquired with Duncan Macniven the Registar General for Scotland. Mr Macniven told Dr Wilson that people had asked for information on the language and he confirmed that it was now the intention of the GRO to include a Scots question in 2011, though he added that the details had not been confirmed. In addition, Dr Wilson enquired whether or not a Scots version of the census questions, as has been done with Gaelic, would be available. Mr Macniven said that the GRO would consider a Scots translation. It is obvious that a good knowledge of the health of the language must be based upon figures gathered in a census and the SLC would like to commend the GRO for making the right decision this time around.
