Scots training for Perth teachers

Categorised in:

Already one of the country's most active supporters of the Scots langauge, Perth and Kinross Council has further extended its commitment to the tongue by holding its first in-service day for teachers interested in teaching Scots to primary school children. The course, designed to meet the challenges of teaching Scots at primary level, was delivered to a full complement of 30 staff and, according to Elaine Hallyburton of Perth & Kinross Libraries, a further 60 teachers from across the authority had expressed interest in attending.

Although Itchy Coo has worked with a number of schools in the authority before, the Scots Language project has not been invited to date to run in-service there on Scots. This event was made possible by collaboration between the outreach team of the Library Service and Itchy Coo. Matthew Fitt, the course leader, said that it was 'very encouraging to be asked to do CPD in P&K for the first time. We had a lively session and staff went back to their schools ready to try out new strategies. It seems there is a real appetite among teachers here for engaging with Scots.'

Itchy Coo hopes to work with P&K Library Services again in the New Year for more in-service training and creative writing courses for senior pupils.
