Scots Tung was founded in 1994 as a forum for campaigning for rights for Scots speakers and as a place for members to practice speaking the language in an informal setting. It began with 8 or 9 members and today has a core of 50 or so with various associates. It is centered on Musselburgh, East Lothian and since foundation Richard Heinsar has been Convener and Treasurer and Bob Fairnie the Secretary. From the beginning, Bob Fairnie sent out copies of the society minutes – entitled Scots Tung Wittins – but since August 1997 this has taken the form of a popular newsletter which includes news about the linguistic, social and political situation of the language. Apart from members, the STW is also sent to many MSPs, East Lothian councilors, many schools in the area, some libraries and the Cross Party Group on the Scots language in the Scottish Parliament. In addition to the STW, the society has for many years now produced a popular series of Christmas cards in Scots. Meetings were formerly held in Brunton Hall but today the meeting places vary in place and time. The Secretary, Bob Fairnie, would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to get involved with Scots Tung and he can be contacted via the society web page at: http://www.scots-tung.com/

Every month the STW will appear here (see below) as a PDF file.
