European Day o Leids

Posted by

The ithir day wis the European Day o Leids - though I'd no hae kent thon gin I haedna seen it on the BBC wabsite the ithir day. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/edl/).

I haed a wee keik at the section on there - an richt enough there's guid stuff on there; but, as ye micht hae came tae expeck, there wis naething about Scots on it. E'en the leet o kintras gied ainlie Inglish, Gaelic, Irish an Welsh as the leids spoken i the UK (leavin out Scots an tae say naething o Urdu, Polish etc.). Weil, aiblins bein left out is better nor the infaumous "nedspeak" the BBC thocht wis funny sum years back, but it's aye no gey guid. Cornish wis left out an aw - e'enthough alang wi Scots it's a recognisit leid unner the Chairter for Lesser Yaised Leids.

Nou, it's true that there's mair important things for the Scots leid nor bein includit on the BBC wabsite - an tae tak it wider, mair important nor offeicial recognition fou stap. I dinna think onieane that kens about sic things wad raither pit £10,000 tae signage an bureaus nor tae wark i schuills, community eddication or giein immigrants a haun i unnerstaunin whit their new neibours is sayin (as haes taen place i Aberdeen, helpin Polish immigrants, for ensaumple). Takkin thon as read, it wadna be a muckle darg for groups like the BBC tae pit in a bittie mair effort whan it comes tae Scots - specially whan ye think o the positive reaction Scots gets whan it daes get exposure. For ensaumple, see the comments ower here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/voices/multilingual/scots_comments.shtml Forbye the obleigatory bodie giein the auld "Gaelic is wir indigenous leid" haivers (though he aye jalouses Scots ocht tae be supportit), the hail is gey favourable tae Scots.

The support is there, the desire tae lairn mair is there - can the BBC no dae better for the Scots fowk that want tae ken mair about their leid an cultur nor daes the nou?
