Trad Stars from Ross-shire

That the Parliament congratulates Simon Thoumire and all his team at Hands Up For Trad on what it considers such an inspiring musical occasion at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2013, held in the Music Hall, Aberdeen, on 7 December; offers a warm round of applause to all the winners of each category and particularly notes the Pipe Band of the Year winners, Ullapool and District Pipe Band, Community Project of the Year won by Gizzen Briggs from Tain and the Gaelic Singer of the Year winner, Rachel Walker, who was brought up in Kinlochewe, and considers that the health of Scots and Gaelic song and the instrumental prowess of the players and singers goes from strength to strength across Scotland thanks to the growing numbers who play, teach, promote and enjoy the country's indigenous music, which BBC Alba screens for an even wider TV audience.

Asterix and the Picts

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of Asterix and the Picts; understands that the latest volume in the comic book series sees Asterix and Obelix travel from Gaul to Iron Age Scotland, where they encounter the Picts, discover whisky, bagpipes, the origins of Hadrian’s Wall and the location of the Loch Ness monster; notes that the book is being published in English, Scots and Gaelic along with many other languages; further understands that the Scots version, Asterix and the Pechts, was translated by the Scots publishing company, Itchy Coo, and the Scots poet and novelist, Matthew Fitt, from Dundee; further notes that the Gaelic version, Asterix ann an Dùthaich nan Cruithneach, will be launched on 1 November 2013 in Inverness, and encourages readers of all ages to pick up a copy and enjoy what it considers a great read.

Isabel Lind Awarded Teaching Lifetime Achievement Award

That the Parliament congratulates Isabel Lind OBE on being awarded the Ted Wragg lifetime achievement award at the UK Teaching Awards; understands that Isabel serves as head teacher at Aileymill Primary School, a school that opened under her tenure and that has, it considers, quickly become a beacon of excellence in teaching the Scots language and culture; acknowledges Isabel's dedication over the last 40 years to educating pupils across Scotland, and wishes her all the best for the future.

Translation of Tintin Adventure into Scots and Gaelic

That the Parliament welcomes the translation of Tintin’s adventure, The Black Island, into both Scots and Gaelic; congratulates Dr Susan Rennie, who did the Scots translation, and Gillibride MacMillan, who did the Gaelic translation, and hopes that readers will be able to enjoy many more of what it considers Tintin’s exciting adventures in Scotland’s own languages in the future.
