Wullie O' Skipigoe

Christina M Costie is not, perhaps, a name that is well known in the world of the Scots language, but she certainly deserves to be much better known. Writing in the 20^th century, Costie produced some wonderful examples of writings in the Orcadian dialect of Scots, full of local idioms and turns of phrase. A few years ago the Westray Heritage Trust produced a version of Costie’s ‘Wullie O’ Skipigoe’ which contains work mostly in Scots, but with some English poems too. A number of Orcadians also came together and produced a CD to accompany the book, reading Costie’s work in the authentic Orcadian accent.
