Lib Dem Leader Calls for More Funding for Scots
Leader of the Liberal Democrats and MSP for Shetland Tavish Scott MSP has lodged a motion demanding the Government supports the Scots language.
Shetland ForWirds raised concerns with Mr Scott that Scottish Arts Council funding cuts could be catastrophic for the Scottish Language Centre and the Scottish National Dictionaries. Both are vital organisations in the fight to protect the Scots language and its many rich local variations.
Commenting, Mr Scott said:
“The Culture Minister spoke warmly about Scots language, stating in Parliament that it is part of our identity and heritage and suggested that our national languages should be valued like any other spoken languages.
“I agree. So why hasn’t the Scottish Government supported and encouraged organisations that fight to protect our languages, rather than allowing the Scottish Arts Council to cut funding for the Scottish Language Centre and the Scottish National Dictionaries.
“In my own constituency, Shetland ForWirds is working hard to ensure that the rich Shetland Dialect survives as a spoken and written tongue in the islands. The rich diversity of language we have across Scotland is something to be valued. It must be protected.”
